CLN SUNBEAMS

Following on from an incredibly strong few months of releases (each of which have been covered here on TMR), Australia’s cln returns with his best track yet. ‘Sunbeams’ is dark, brooding and beautifully produced – an audiophile’s dream. The breathy vocoder that accompanies Callan Alexander’s voice is reminiscent of Bon Iver’s most experimental days, while the delicate retro synth melody introduced about a minute in takes you back to Kraftwerk’s The Man Machine. Beyond his diverse influences, cln brings something truly unique to the track’s wobbling, hypnotic build and drop. “I really enjoyed making this song from a production perspective,” he explains. “There are three sections that sonically are super different, but still with recurring sounds and themes that go on throughout the piece. The start is calm and contemplative, then there is the hectic drop section in the middle and then a full beat switch at the end. It’s fun to make songs that evolve.” And he’s absolutely right. It’s this variety that makes ‘Sunbeams’ his finest release yet. -Dan Peeke
